When I think about HBCU school's, I think of family, good times and helping African-American students get a good education, but it seems like Grambling State's New Head Volleyball Coach Chelsey Lucas forgot about what it means to represent an HBCU. As reported on April 5, 2022, Grambling's Volleyball players have come out to say Coach Lucas cut the entire team and the report was confirmed by the Grambling State Volleyball Fans twitter account. Lucas, who is in her first season at Grambling State, was previously coaching at the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, and according to rumors, she has cut the whole team to recruit players from Pine Bluff. As of right now, if you look at the players section under the Grambling State Volleyball Team, you will get a 404 Error message, which makes it seem like the reports are true.
To me personally, if these reports come out to be true in the long run, Coach Lucas shouldn't be allowed to coach another team for the rest of her career. I can understand cutting players for not being good, having grade issues or getting in trouble outside of school, but to cut your entire team in favor of players from Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Lucas should be ashamed of herself. Not only will she have to scramble to get a team together, but she just messed up a bunch of players chances of staying in school. Coach Lucas didn't take into account the players that are there on scholarship, who may not be able to afford a college education or the ones who come from low income areas where school is their escape. Coach Lucas made a brass decision to try and steal players away from a rival SWAC school, but did it in the worst way possible. There are no updates yet about Lucas and her coaching status at Grambling State, but if I were Grambling State, I'd be looking to move on from Lucas as soon as possible. The all around sad part of this entire story besides the entire team getting cut is the fact the Lucas herself, IS A GRAMBLING STATE ALUMNI!!!! It just goes to show that Gram Fam clearly isn't you Fam.
